Indian university stresses role of video conferencing

Periyar Maniammai University (PMU) in Tamil Nadu state of India plans to introduce courses in distant learning through video conferencing.

Started in 1988, PMU now has 16 departments over 216 acres. Dr N Ramachandran Vice Chancellor of the university has long been an advocate of ICT in education and he says that acquiring knowledge in ICT is essential for achieving growth in the present competitive world. Video conferencing in particular can add value to education, especially when reaching out to students in rural areas.

Video conferencing has long been used in education: City University of Hong Kong used the technology to continue its lessons throughout the SARS period and University of Adelaide and University of South Australia have deployed videoconferencing solutions as a way to educate undergraduate medical, nursing and allied health students in rural clinical schools.
