Chinese city plans wireless comms network
The government of Wuhan in central China is planning to launch an initiative to wirelessly connect government officials and the public in the district of Jianghan. Known as ‘Wireless Jianghan’, the project will see each government department encouraged to use a ‘Wireless Home Affairs’ network.
The wireless communications network will facilitate the government’s efforts in urban management, municipal transport and public order management, according to the Party Secretary of Jianghan District, Zhang Ping.
To use the service, civil servants log in to a ‘mobile office platform for government information’ using their mobile phones. This gives them direct access to government information via departmental web sites.
The public will be able to use services provided on the network, such as traffic information updates, via their mobiles.
The service is expected to be up and running by May 2010.
